In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 1, the Cat in the Hat will make a special appearance at Ben Franklin Crafts in Towanda from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904. Geisel wrote under the pen names of Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg, and Rosetta Stone. His first attempt at a children's book, And to Think that I Saw it on Mulberry Street was rejected twenty-seven times before it was published. Bartholomew and the Oobleck was published in 1939 and was a Caldecott Honor book.

In May 1954, Life Magazine published a report on literacy stating that children were not learning to read because books were boring. As a result of that study, William Ellsworth Spaulding, director of the education division of Houghton Mifflin gave Geisel the 250 words he felt were important for first graders to be able to read and challenged him to write a book using all of those words. But it had to be a book that would hold a child's interest; one that a child wouldn't be able to put down! Geisel accepted the challenge and The Cat in the Hat was born! That was the book that made Dr. Seuss the famous children's author and illustrator that he is known as today. By the time of his death in 1991, at the age of 87, Seuss had written and illustrated forty-four children's books.

The Cat in the Hat will be reading for the children on March 1, between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. After each story time, she will be available for parents to take pictures of their children with her (parents bring your own cameras). There will be a FREE Kids Make-it and Take-it art project from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

So, children who are big or small,

Children who are short or tall,

Come to the Ben Franklin Crafts for fun

And hear the Cat in the Hat read to everyone!
