Sayre Public Library extends hours

The Sayre Public Library began offering Monday hours to its patrons this week.

The South Elmer Avenue library is now open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays and has extended its Wednesday hours as well, said library director Kim Miller. The library now closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays instead of at 5 p.m.

Library officials originally proposed the extended hours after a change in state regulations that would have required libraries to be open 45 hours a week, Miller said.

That requirement has since been delayed due to the number of libraries statewide that could not support additional hours of operation, Miller said. However, with the Sayre Public Library already open 40 hours a week, adding five additional hours was easier for the facility than it would have been for smaller libraries, she said.

"We're hoping that it's going to be a good thing for us," she said.

So far, patrons seem to be welcoming the change, Miller said. On Monday, a steady flow of patrons took advantage of the new hours.

Miller said the Monday hours will be convenient for patrons who previously had to wait until Tuesday to take advantage of the library. Patrons who work during the week are also excited about the library staying open later on Wednesdays, she said.

"Patrons are excited about it," Miller said. "I think it's going to keep picking up."
