The state police fire marshal on Friday ruled that an "undetermined" cause resulted in the fire that destroyed a home this week near Canton in Ward Township, Tioga County, Pa., according to Canton Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief George Jennings.
Jennings said the ruling was made because the home is "too far gone" and there is "nothing to go by."
When asked for comment, Jennings said the large log home was insured. He didn't know the monetary amount of the loss.
The fire company, along with six other fire departments, was on the scene for nearly eight hours in windy conditions as firefighters battled the fire Wednesday, according to Jennings.
He said the fire destroyed the home at 164 Church St., Ward Township, owned by John Brown.
Jennings said no one was injured.
A fire department member, Melissa Jennings, also said the weather conditions were bad during the call as firefighters had to deal with snow, ice and rain at the secluded mountaintop location. The home was set far back off Church Street.
The call for the fire was received at 2:47 p.m. Wednesday, and the fire started in the garage, according to George Jennings.
Other fire departments assisting were Liberty, Blossburg, Troy, South Creek Township, Monroeton, and Franklindale. Mansfield and Morris fire departments provided relief and Ralston Fire Department covered the Canton station.
