Towanda School District asked to collect school property tax in Asylum, Towanda townships
Two more tax collectors have asked the Towanda Area School District to collect the school property tax for them.
The Towanda Area School Board will be voting today to approve tax collection agreements that were proposed by Asylum Township Tax Collector Billie Jo Tuttle and Towanda Township Tax Collector Karrie L. Green.
Under the agreements, the Towanda Area School District will collect the school property tax in Asylum and Towanda townships through 2017, said Doreen Secor, the business manager of the Towanda Area School District.
Under the agreements, Tuttle and Green appoint the school district as the deputy tax collector for the collection of the school property tax in Asylum and Towanda townships through 2017.
If the agreements are approved, property owners in Asylum and Towanda townships will send their school property tax payment to a lock box at the Citizens & Northern Bank.
Last year, the Towanda Area School Board reduced the tax collectors' commission for collecting the school property tax from $3.40 per bill to $1.20 per bill. The reduction has prompted a number of tax collectors to ask the school district to take over the collection of the school property tax in their municipalities.
The reduction in the commission reflects the fact that tax collectors no longer have to send out the tax bills themselves, Secor has said. The company that prints the bills now also mails them out.
Section of Coolbaugh Road loses its name
The Wysox Township supervisors have voted to remove the name Coolbaugh Road from a .3 mile section of the road, according to the township secretary.
The section that will lose the Coolbaugh Road name begins at the intersection with Mercur Hill Road and ends at state Route 187, said Kurt Lafy, township secretary and zoning officer.
The section in question is no longer used as a public roadway because it is the location of a bridge over the Towanda Creek that was removed years ago, he said.
From now on, Coolbaugh Road, which begins at U.S. Route 6, will officially end at the intersection with Mercur Hill Road, he said.
