Free computer classes launch this spring in Tioga County

The Apalachin Library and the Waverly Free Library will both launch free, professionally taught computer courses this spring. These classes will help participants build their job readiness skills, and will cover topics such as Windows 7, Microsoft Office applications, and resume writing. Anyone is eligible to sign up, including residents in other counties.

Classes will be provided over the next two years through a collaboration with the Finger Lakes Library System and the Broome-Tioga Literacy Volunteers. Funding for this project has been provided through the New York State Library's Adult Literacy Library Services grant program.

"In today's economic climate, computer literacy has become a necessity for virtually all jobseekers, even those who do not work in a traditional office environment," notes Corinne Weible, Outreach Services Manager for the Finger Lakes Library System. "These classes will help jobseekers develop the essential skills they need to successfully find employment."

New laptops equipped with Microsoft Office 2010 will be provided for participants to use during classes. These laptops will also be available to all library patrons for in-library use when classes are not in session. Both libraries also plan to add many related materials to their permanent collections, including titles on computer basics, careers and jobseeking.

To sign up for classes, contact either participating library. Detailed class schedules are available at both libraries, and the general schedule is as follows:

- Apalachin Library: Mondays, 1-3 p.m.; April 16 to June 25: call (607) 625-3333.

- Waverly Free Library: Wednesdays, 1 to 3 p.m., April 18 to June 20; call (607) 565-9341.

The Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS) is a cooperative library system, chartered to serve the public libraries in Cayuga, Cortland, Seneca, Tioga and Tompkins Counties. Their 33 member libraries are independent and governed by local Boards and Trustees. FLLS works to stimulate, coordinate and strengthen libraries and library services within their five-county service area.
