SMITHFIELD TWP. -
A Thursday morning furnace fire quickly spread to the rest of an Ulster Road trailer, destroying the structure, firefighters said.
The Smithfield Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched just after 10 a.m. Thursday to a fire at 3241 Ulster Rd., said second assistant chief Jake Lezak. Ridgebury, North Towanda and Ulster-Sheshequin firefighters also responded to the fire, followed soon after by a tanker from the Towanda Borough Fire Department.
The fire began in a furnace on the trailer's main floor, Lezak said. A female homeowner was home at the time and evacuated the residence after a neighbor alerted her to smoke coming from the top of the trailer, he said.
The fire spread from the furnace room into the ceiling and through the duct work to the trailer's basement, Lezak said. It took firefighters about four hours to fully extinguish the blaze. The trailer is a total loss, Lezak said.
"Everything went as well as it could for us," Lezak said. "We had a lot of great help."
Dandy Mini Marts supplied firefighters with food during the fire, and disaster action teams from the Bradford/Sullivan and Susquehanna and Wyoming Counties chapters of the American Red Cross provided canteen services to first responders.
The Red Cross also provided the two adults living at the residence with food, clothing and bed linens, according to the Red Cross. Several family members also offered assistance to the homeowners, Lezak said.
Nobody was injured in Thursday's fire, Lezak said. The Smithfield division of Tri-Township Ambulance stood by during the fire.
