Sheshequin Twp. bringing back planning commission

SHESHEQUIN TWP. - Two years after dissolving the township's planning commission, supervisors plan to reinstate a smaller board to help guide the township's future.

Board members agreed in February to begin the process of reinstating a planning commission. At Monday's meeting, supervisors said they hope to advertise an ordinance in March that would establish a five-member commission once adopted.

The township originally voted to create a planning commission in August 2002. Supervisors voted 2-1 to disband the then nine-member commission in February 2012.

At the time, supervisors gave several reasons for dissolving the board. The commission frequently did not have a majority of members present, and monthly meetings were often canceled due to lack of quorum. The commission's duties were also limited given that the township has no zoning or subdivision and land development ordinance, supervisors said.

When supervisors Kurt Lafy and John Smith joined the board in January, they and Les Wanck - who voted against the commission's dissolution - agreed to reinstate the board.

One of the newly formed commission's first responsibilities will be to review - and possibly update - the township's comprehensive plan. The plan has not been reviewed since it was first written, Lafy said.

The township currently seeks citizens interested in serving on the commission once it is reinstated, Lafy said.
